Friends of Chabad will use SUV to transport volunteers and food

Greenvale, L.I., October 24 – Penn Toyota in Greenvale, Long Island, presented a new Highlander Hybrid SUV to Friends of Chabad of Lake Success today as part of Toyota’s “100 Cars for Good” program. 100 Cars for Good is a major philanthropic program from Toyota that is awarding vehicles to 100 nonprofit organizations over the course of 100 days, based on votes from the public.

Friends of Chabad of Lake Success runs “Chaim’s Kitchen” and “Smiles on Seniors,” volunteer programs dedicated to reaching out to the lonely and hungry in the area.

“We provide companionship for the elderly and food and household necessities to individuals in need” says David Ezagui, director of the organization. “We promote social interactions and activities for seniors. Our volunteers visit homebound or lonely seniors in their homes, in assisted living facilities, and in hospitals. In addition, we cook and prepare food packages for individuals in need.”

The 100 Cars for Good contest launched in March 2001 with more than 3,000 applicants entering for a chance to win a new Toyota. Applications were reduced to 500 finalists by an independent panel of judges. Then the finalists submitted online profiles to encourage their friends and supporters to vote for them on the Toyota USA Facebook page, with five finalists up for consideration by the public each day.

The Friends will use their new Toyota to transport volunteer teens to visit the elderly partners in the “Smiles for Seniors” program and to deliver food from “Chaim’s Kitchen.” The Toyota Highlander is a versatile sport-utility vehicle (SUV that can seat seven passengers in three rows of seats or, with the two rear rows folded flat, accommodate up to 94 cubic feet of cargo. The Hybrid version of the Highlander is rated at 28 miles-per-gallon in combined city/highway driving by the EPA, which is an outstanding figure for such a large vehicle.

The winning vehicles come with an extended six-year, 100,000-mile Vehicle Service Agreement, compliments of Toyota Financial Services.

“Although Toyota USA has a history of giving to nonprofit programs, 100 Cars for Good is the first Toyota initiative to put the public in the driver’s seat of one of their major philanthropic efforts,” said Chris Penn, general manager of Penn Toyota. “We are proud to be able to award this vehicle to Friends of Chabad of Lake Success to help them provide valuable and much-needed services in their community.” Penn Toyota is a three-generation, family owned dealership that has represented Toyota in the area for more than 40 years.
